The National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya has a mandate of enhancing social economic empowerment of Persons with Disabilities in Kenya and plays a critical role in the realization of the aspirations of the Agenda for Sustainable Development.

One of the key programmes of the Fund is anchored on the Right to Education for Persons with Disabilities. Barriers to full inclusion of Persons with Disabilities include limited access to education and lack of access to physical environments as they pursue education. In response to the call to leave no one behind, the Fund seeks to implement goal number 4 of the SDGs which seeks to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. One of the targets is building and upgrading education facilities that are child, disability and gender sensitive and provide safe, nonviolent, inclusive and effective learning environments for all.

The last one decade has also seen the Fund successfully implement a Flagship Projects program. Anchored on the right to education, the program is aimed at developing infrastructure in institutions of learning in order to enhance learning experiences, increase enrolment and retention of learners in the institutions as well as help them acquire relevant skills. One Hundred and Ninety-Nine (199) institutions for learners with disabilities across Kenya have benefitted with accessible and fully equipped facilities that includes dormitories, vocational training workshops, classrooms, dining facilities, computer labs among others.

In addition, the Fund supports an average of 200 institutions for learners with disabilities across the country with annual grants towards improving the facilities/renovations, purchase of learning equipment, WASH programs, therapy equipment or any other development that would facilitate learning. Accommodating and accessible environment is key in supporting learners with disabilities in accessing education.
